Population reaches 607,500

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) revealed yesterday that Macau’s population reached 607,500 at the end of last year, representing an increase of 25,500 people (more than 4,4 percent year-on-year). The female population accounted for 51,4 percent of the overall number of inhabitants. The aging population (aged 65 and above) accounted for 8 percent of the total, representing an increase of 0,3 percent year-on-year. In terms of young people, the population aged between 0 and 14 accounted for 11,3 percent, down by 0,3 percentage points, whereas the adult population (aged between 15 and 64) accounted for 80 percent, representing a decrease of 0,1 percentage points. A total of 6,571 live births were delivered during 2013, a decrease of 744 year-on-year. The gender ratio stood at 114,5, corresponding to 114,5 male babies per 100 female babies. Mortality cases totaled 1,920 last year, which is an increase of 79 year-on-year. Neoplasms and diseases of the circulatory or respiratory systems were the top causes of death. During the fourth quarter of 2013, there were 1,756 live births and 528 deaths. The number of Chinese immigrants has dropped, with DSEC registering a total of 3,339 new immigrants from China living in Macau in 2013, representing a decrease of 722 year-on-year. A total of 1,335 illegal Chinese immigrants were repatriated to the mainland, which was an increase of 184 cases year-on-year. During 2013, marriage registration reached 4,153 cases, up by 370 year-on-year while 1,172 cases of divorce were recorded, representing an increase of 25 cases year-on-year.
