Airport passenger traffic rises to 5 mln in 2013

Macau International Airport handled over 5 million passengers last year, 11 percent more than the year before.

The airport says it handled over 48,000 aircraft movements, 16 percent more.

It says its passenger figures are the highest since it began making efforts to counter the drop in traffic in 2008, when the introduction of regular direct flights between Taiwan and the mainland meant passengers flying between the two places no longer had to use Macau or Hong Kong as a staging post.

The airport handled over 450,000 passengers last month, 14 percent more than a year earlier, and over 4,400 aircraft movements, 16 percent more.
