MOP5,000 target salary for mainland domestic helpers

A target salary of MOP5,000 for mainland domestic helpers may become the indicative price to drive an overall pay rise in the domestic work industry. According to Macau Daily News, Ao Ioeng Kuong Kao, head of the Macau Overseas Employment Agen-
cy Association, deems the monthly salary for mainland domestic helpers will not be attractive unless it is above MOP5,000. The local government estimates the first batch of about a hundred domestic helpers from mainland China to arrive during the first half of the year. Affected by the recent rise of the RMB exchange rate in addition to the relatively higher living expenses in Macau, the salary has to rise MOP1,000 above the previously predicted MOP4,000. Ao Ioeng also indicated that if the relevant policy requires  mainland domestic workers be trained before they can be brought into Macau, their starting salary will inevitably creep up higher. Currently, Macau domestic helpers’ salaries vary from MOP3,000 to MOP4,000 depending on the worker’s experience. Mr Vong who is in charge of a migrant worker employment agency says that Macau employers might seriously consider such a pay rise. As domestic work is similar in nature, Southeast Asian helpers will probably also ask for parity.
